Cleanser, Toner, Moisturiser, and SPF
When it comes to achieving healthy, glowing skin, consistency is key. At Alchemy Therapy Centre, we believe that a solid skincare routine doesn’t need to be complicated; it just needs to be right for you.
Whether you’re a skincare novice or looking to refine your routine, understanding the four fundamental steps can transform your skin’s health and appearance.
The Correct Order: Why It Matters
The order in which you apply your skincare products is just as important as the products themselves. Think of it like building a house; you need a solid foundation before you add the finishing touches. Here’s the golden rule: apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency, allowing each layer to absorb properly before moving to the next.
Morning and Evening Routine:

Step 1: Cleanser – The Foundation of Great Skin
What It Does: Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, pollution, and dead skin cells that accumulate throughout the day and night. It’s the essential first step that prepares your skin to absorb the beneficial ingredients in your subsequent products.

Benefits: - Prevents clogged pores and breakouts - Removes environmental pollutants - Prepares skin for better product absorption - Maintains skin’s natural balance - Promotes cell turnover

Choosing the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type
Oily/Combination Skin: Look for gel-based or foaming cleansers containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil to control excess sebum without stripping the skin.
Dry Skin: Opt for cream or oil-based cleansers with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ceramides that cleanse whilst maintaining moisture.
Sensitive Skin: Choose fragrance-free, gentle milk or micellar water cleansers with soothing ingredients like chamomile, aloe vera, or oat extract.
Normal Skin: You have flexibility—try balancing gel cleansers or gentle foaming formulas that maintain your skin’s equilibrium.

Step 2: Toner – The Balancing Act
What It Does: Modern toners have evolved far beyond the harsh, alcohol-laden formulas of the past. Today’s toners hydrate, balance pH levels, and deliver targeted ingredients deep into the skin.

Benefits: - Restores skin’s natural pH balance after cleansing - Provides an extra layer of hydration - Prepares skin to absorb serums and moisturisers more effectively - Can target specific concerns like enlarged pores or dullness - Removes any remaining traces of impurities

Choosing the Right Toner for Your Skin Type
Oily/Combination Skin: Seek out astringent toners with witch hazel, niacinamide, or AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) to minimise pores and control shine.
Dry Skin: Hydrating toners with hyaluronic acid, rose water, or glycerin will add moisture and plumpness to thirsty skin.
Sensitive Skin: Alcohol-free, soothing toners containing centella asiatica, cucumber, or thermal water will calm and comfort without irritation.
Normal Skin: Balancing toners with antioxidants like green tea or vitamin C help maintain your skin’s healthy state.

Step 3: Moisturiser – Lock in the Goodness
What It Does: Moisturiser creates a protective barrier that locks in hydration and all the beneficial ingredients you’ve just applied. Even oily skin needs moisturiser—the key is finding the right formula.

Benefits: - Hydrates and softens skin - Strengthens the skin’s protective barrier - Prevents moisture loss throughout the day - Can deliver additional active ingredients - Reduces the appearance of fine lines - Protects against environmental stressors

Choosing the Right Moisturiser for Your Skin Type:
Oily/Combination Skin: Lightweight, oil-free gel or water-based moisturisers with ingredients like hyaluronic acid or niacinamide provide hydration without heaviness.
Dry Skin: Rich creams or balms containing shea butter, ceramides, or squalane deliver intense hydration and repair the skin barrier.
Sensitive Skin: Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic formulas with minimal ingredients—look for colloidal oatmeal, allantoin, or panthenol to soothe and protect.
Normal Skin: Lightweight lotions or creams with antioxidants and peptides maintain balance whilst providing anti-ageing benefits.

Step 4: SPF Protection – Your Non-Negotiable Shield
What It Does: Sun protection is the single most important anti-ageing step in your routine. UV rays cause premature ageing, hyperpigmentation, and increase skin cancer risk—even on cloudy days and through windows.

Benefits: - Prevents premature ageing (wrinkles, fine lines, age spots) - Protects against harmful UVA and UVB rays - Reduces risk of skin cancer - Prevents hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone - Maintains results from other skincare treatments

Choosing the Right SPF for Your Skin Type
Oily/Combination Skin: Mattifying or gel-based SPF formulas with a lightweight finish prevent shine and won’t clog pores.
Dry Skin: Hydrating SPF moisturisers with added nourishing ingredients provide sun protection whilst keeping skin supple.
Sensitive Skin: Mineral (physical) sunscreens containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are less likely to cause irritation than chemical filters.
Normal Skin: You can use either chemical or mineral formulas—choose based on texture preference and whether you want added skincare benefits.
Important Note: Apply SPF as the final step every morning, using at least SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours if you’re spending extended time outdoors.
